Most people know them as French fries.
But the fries we know today were actually perfected in Belgium. 
Fried potato strips first appeared near Pont Neuf in Paris during the late 1700s, but Belgian fry makers made them their own by cutting them thinner and introducing the famous double-frying method that creates a crispy outside and a fluffy centre. 
When American soldiers were introduced to them in French-speaking Belgium, they brought the recipe home and started calling them “French fries” – a name that stuck around the world.
